What I Was Never Taught

Have you ever had one of those moments when
All of your human emotions settles in
You realize that as great as some technologies can be
They really can't be human like you and me
Because our bodies are made of flesh and blood
Technology is plastic following algorithms of could
Without any emotion or relationship to life
Only procedures that protocols decide to provide
Did you ever see a person so absorbed in their phone
They stand in a crowd of people reaching into the unknown
For something to relate to some one to understand
That they themselves are human reaching out their hand
To some one to hold and say I am here
No need for worry no need for fear
Your safe in my presence I'll try to understand
What it is to be alive like you in your realm
Of life that is breathing alive and dejected
Because technologies provide only mainstream objectives
To merchandise our lives with quick impulse sales
No matter the tyranny that is allowed to assail
Men, women and children, every color and gender
Denying existence is a very human contender
To time, which is now money, words, money talks
Relationships are for business, hopelessness stalks
Around like a drunk man who's lost his way home
Waking up in an alley confused and alone
Our affections are ridiculed by jolly ranchers
Sentiments are prescribed like pharmaceutical enhancers
Cheap concerns sell out our earnest devotions
Usurping our loyalties to inappropriate variations
Against our own choices, against human rights
Leaving us all to grope in our plight
To live our lives well in a way that we want
Where togetherness is included not just a taunt
Of hey join this, and you can be all of that
Preplanning the stages on which you will act
As if you're involved with living and choosing
When in reality it's your individuality you are losing
Being droned into a clone or idea of what should be
When being alive is enough for any body
To follow and learn without harsh imitations
Of what life is when given patience and direction
In making a way that leads you to more
People and places than just your front door
Where you sit on a computer, or cell phone or both
While the world around you thinks on it's own dotes
To pressure a sell, an idea, or a way
Turn a quick dollar and return with out say
In taking away from a life that most needs
People to share with the simplest things
Like friendship where two or three or more
Can learn from each other to lay hold and restore
The emptiness that possessions can't provide without another
To share in the greatness of the pleasures like supper
Where one brings a dish, one brings the drinks
Another brings desserts and their happiness syncs
To laugh and share photos and memories and ideas
With each other to make a living moment to give
Into the lives of the people they are with
Hoping those moments none will forget
So many venues to open up to so freely
If only our leaders weren't all being so needy
Like four year old preschoolers fighting over toys
With no teacher to separate them from the lives they destroy
Or curb their behavior to keep safe the whole school
And innocence is punished for some half witted fool
Who believes that his muscle makes might worth the right
While others do better because they delight
In simply doing better because they well can
Without being beaten down by a hand
That wants to destroy every good in the world
Freeze it in fear and hail all its worth
As justified duties annexing real life
Where learning and growing is denied just to blight
The goodness that world is so hungry for
Regardless the histories we've all shared before
We wait and we pray, meditate and affirm
That doing good to another is never to be burned
Or thrown to the way side to be eradicated and forgotten
Fed to the slanderous versions of the rotten
Fiends in the world who exploit only to profit
The innocent lives of the people who they taught
Yet the head of the sentinels and brain washed nations
Are fed lies and hatred to defeat good intentions
Of living so simple an every day living
That holds true to the good it finds in the giving
To family, to friendship, to another who we would
Take time to offer our presence as something good
My humanness is showing in this verse tonight
Because of the path I've been through just to write
Another libation for my own living plight
To live in a way that I know would make right
Without taking anything from anyone else
In providing a decency of the living for myself
Celebrating all the good I've known and understand
In a way that would honor those who would help plan
A better future forward away from this place
Where living has been whittled down to a space
That few would understand and yet fewer still
Would ever believe that was another's will
Without my consent, my knowledge, or concern
How could I have known what I was never taught to learn
